A podcast for true comic book fans
In an announcement on social media Henry Cavill Confirms he is no longer playing the Man of Steel. In his post on Instagram he wrote “I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman.”
Cavill first took on the role of Superman in 2013’s “Man of Steel,” and went on to reprise the role in two sequels: “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Justice League.” He won praise from fans and critics alike for his portrayal of the iconic superhero, with his chiseled features and muscular physique making him a perfect fit for the role.
This comes as a shock to most fans after his surprise cameo in Black Adam. Rumor has it Dwyane Johnson fought studio executives to have Henry Cavill reprise his role, which was very well received by audiences. But according to Cavill Gunn and Safran want to build a new DC Universe. Which also leaves to question the slate of DCEU movies still yet to be released.
Also keep in mind this came on the heels of Cavill leaving the successful TV series The Witcher in which he played the lead role of Geralt. Many believe he departed the show so he’d have availability to play Superman once again. In conjunction with other news/rumors that DC Films was fast tracking a Man of Steel 2.
This decision has shacken confidence in Gunn and Safran’s leadership for DC Films. With some on social media already calling for a boycott of the movies. Only time will tell what will happen with the DC Universe.
Cavill concluded his post with “My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.” We at Super Hero Speak wish Henry Cavill all the best.
